William Conrad Gumble ’59 died on February 9 at the Hospice Community Center in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. His wife, JoAnne, predeceased him in April 2010. Bill came to Dartmouth from Hawley High School in Paupack, Pennsylvania, where he was a lifelong resident. At Dartmouth Bill was a brother of Chi Phi and played freshman baseball and basketball. He was a four-year member of the Pre-Law Club and Dartmouth Outing Club. Stu Clark ’59, a roommate with Bill at Chi Phi, remembers him as the “best athlete in the house” when he led it to a number of interfraternity championships. In his junior and senior years he also was a member of Bait & Bullet. Bill became an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Paupack Fish and Game Club. After Dartmouth he earned his law degree at Dickinson School of Law in 1963. A retired lawyer at the time of his passing, he had practiced law in Milford and Paupack and formerly served as Pick County (Pennsylvania) district attorney. He was a former chairman of the board of trustees on PennStar Bank, a former member of the board of NBT Bank and a member of the Masons and Shriners. He also was affiliated with Gumble Brothers Inc., a top-quality provider of building materials to contractors and individuals. Bill is survived by son Bill Jr., a stepdaughter, two stepsons and several grandchildren.
